Ever since I've read David Eddings's "The Elenium" when I was ten, I knew I would always be more interested in fantasy worlds than the one we live in. Brave warriors, romance, and Sparhawk's sarcastic personality got me addicted to humorous fantasy action and adventure. But it wasn't the magic that kept me fascinated - it was the protagonist's relationships with his friends and comrades, this strong bond between them that had me on the edge of my seat during the action scenes. Opening a new book has always been like entering a new family, and I simply wouldn't care for their adventures if their personalities were weak.

But the local library was a small one, and I soon ran out of adult and coming of age epic fantasy, and discovered something even better. Something that could be happening just outside my windows - urban fantasy and superhero series. My only problem with them was the unrealistic character development: a teen hero saving the world all by himself, a strong female lead suddenly falling in love at first sight or letting the romance overtake the whole storyline. I realized that I have more interest in superheroes' background stories than supernatural powers, and that even a supernatural love story has to fit into the plot in a natural way. More than sharp swords and strong females in urban fantasy, I enjoyed the conflict that the plot created in their hearts.

The first book in the Sky Ghosts series is about this. It's about superheroes being human. Just ordinary people with their needs and fears and feelings. About self-sacrifice and love being able to win the hearts of the strongest ones. About friendship and brotherhood that often replace family for those who don't have it. About responsibility and care for those who need it, no matter if you like them or not. But most of all, it's about bravery and spirit and adventure.

There's a variety of ages, so both adult readers and teens will find it interesting. The series does have a young adult flair to it, and reviewers referred to it as a "a coming of age fantasy adventure" or "a new adult fantasy adventure". It's been compared to the Avengers and the A-Team because of the humorous dialogue during the battle scenes, and the assassin fantasy subgenre was mentioned quite often. If you like a strong female protagonist, I hope you'll be able to relate at least to one of the two in this book.

However, from my perspective, this first book is only an introduction. While it's a full-length novel with a separate storyline, it's no more than a glimpse into the characters' personalities and what they're made of. At some point they stole this story from me and took control over it in their own style. Now there's so much about them that I'd like to share that some of them will have a book of their own.
